Springs fail on cycles
A door installed in the mid-90s was likely hung with a torsion spring sized for the lighter steel panels common then, on hardware that's now pushing three decades of cycles. Springs don't fail on a schedule; they fail on cycle count, and a 1995 spring has had a lot more open-and-close trips than one installed ten years ago.
